The Topsy
Turvy doll dates back to the Civil War era. Some sources suggest slaves
initially created the doll as a way for slave children to conceal their
black dolls.
My great aunt made this doll, about 80 years ago, for my mother. The design
of the doll’s dress illustrates the troubling racial stereotypes of the era.
