Dried Flower CraftsCollect wild flowers or flowers from your garden flowers, to use in craft projects. Pick the flowers when they are at their prime, or slightly immature. If picking wild flowers, don’t accidently pick poisonous flowers that can give you a rash, or pick in an area that doesn’t allow visitors to gather the wild foliage.

How to Dry Flowers

An easy way to dry the flowers is by securing a bouquet-like bunch, with a rubber band and hanging upside down, in a dry, dark, warm, well-ventilated area for a few weeks. You can also dry press flowers by sandwiching a layer of flowers between paper towels, sandwiched between sheets of newspaper, and applying a heavy object atop the stack, such as several heavy books. Another method is using a desiccant, like silica gel, to dry the flowers. This involves covering the flowers with the substance and leaving in an airtight container for a number of days.

Using Dried Flowers and Petals

When the flowers are dry, use them in a variety of craft projects, such as the ones pictured here.

The framed dried wild flowers was made over 35 years ago. Use dry flowers to embellish craft projects, such as the birdhouse pictured below, or press them between sheets of wax paper, to make greeting cards, such as the picture to the bottom right. This involves running a warm iron over two sheets of wax paper, with pressed flower petals sandwiched between the sheets. You can also used dried flowers in your scrapbook projects.
